You Tube Uses

Many people have seen you tube videos before. I have decided that as long as I have students doing silly things on you tube like drinking a jar of pickle juice and then throwing up, my class could make use of and add more useful things to you tube. My freshmen are currently reading When the Legends Die by Hal Borland. This book is a fictional account of a Ute Indian. In the past I have had students research different aspects of the book. This year I will be having them find a Native American legend on www.youtube.com and watch it. Then, they can create their own story that mimics it or create their own legend for something and make a video to upload. This way they can search and watch some videos as well as practice making useful contributions. I will add a link to some when we are done so you can check them out.

Sounds like a great idea. Makes the learning more real. Is this something they do at home or in school? Do your students have the technology necessary to create you tube videos at home?

I also use Youtube to teach lessons to my third grade students and the students love it. They get very excited and engaged. I'm sure your students will enjoy it as well. It's a good thing that your students have access to it. Youtube is blocked at my school so my students wouldn't be able to look up videos. I only get to use it to enhance my lessons. Good luck with the project and let us know how it went.

How nice that you are incorporating a medium that they value. Do you have search criteria or a way to assist them? They could use all of their time on Pickle Juice :)

I did a staw poll the other day and about 75% of them have the technology at home. I was pretty impressed. I have also done some searching and found some good ones out there so I will be able to stear them in the correct directions (i.e. away from pickle juice or beatle juice, etc.). I was shocked that you tube is not blocked at our school. It is just a case of no one has had a problem with it yet. At any rate, I will work to develop a rubric, but I am open to suggestions.
